Laser Eye Surgery Consultation

The Permanent Eyesight Solution

Living with a refractive error in your vision can be a lot to deal with. Prescriptions change, glasses and contacts need to be bought and replaced if they break or get lost, and, depending on your eyes, you might have medical conditions that make it difficult to use your visual aid.

If these problems sound familiar to you, then you might benefit from undergoing laser eye surgery. Laser eye surgery is a permanent procedure that could alter the prescription you need to help you see more clearly.

However, not everyone is a candidate for the procedure, which is why we offer comprehensive consultations. This consultation allows us to examine your eyes and make sure they are healthy enough for the procedure, and help us ensure that your eyes could actually benefit from laser eye surgery.

A consultation isn’t a commitment, just a conversation. For more information about laser eye surgery, and to find out if you could benefit from it, please book a consultation.

What is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery, also known as refractive eye surgery, is the name used to describe a variety of different procedures. These procedures use lasers to reduce or even eliminate refractive errors, including those caused by myopia, presbyopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

Laser eye surgery, like most forms of surgery, is permanent. It physically alters the refractive properties of your eyes, but that doesn’t mean that every patient will enjoy perfect vision. Even if you have the surgery, you might still need to use glasses or contact lenses to enjoy clear vision. During your consultation, your optometrist will let you know what sort of results you can reasonably expect.

Different surgeries have different approaches, and some people might be a better fit for some procedures rather than others. The laser eye surgeries we offer consultations for include:

LASIK is one of the most common forms of laser eye surgery performed on patients. During the procedure, an ophthalmologist will make a small incision in the outer layer of your eye (the epithelium), creating a flap that is then folded back out of the way.

By folding the flap out of the way, your surgeon can access the inner layers of your cornea, which they will then reshape with the use of an excimer laser, changing the prescription of your eyes. After reshaping the cornea, the flap is set back in its original position and left to heal, a process that typically takes a few days.

Instead of creating a flap from the corneal lens of your eye, like in LASIK, PRK removes the epithelium altogether to grant the excimer laser access to the cornea.

After the laser reshapes the cornea, the lens is left to heal over, a process that typically takes a couple of days.

Patients with very high prescriptions may benefit more from a refractive lens exchange than from LASIK or PRK. During a refractive lens exchange, an ophthalmologist removes the natural lens of your eye and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to correct your vision.

There are different types of IOLs available, so your eye care team will work with you to determine the best type for you.

Preoperative Preparation

Before you come in for your surgery, make sure you book a couple of days off work or school to recover. Your eyes will need a little bit of time to heal, so avoid activities that could strain them and affect the healing process.

If you are getting RLE surgery, start using the recommended eye drops 2 days before your surgery. Your optometrist will let you know which eye drops would be the best fit for you.

When you come in for your surgery, please make sure you are not wearing:

  • Makeup
  • Colognes, perfumes, and fragrances
  • Any product that may contain alcohol

It is also recommended that you wear comfortable clothes not made of wool or fleece since these can create lint that could cause problems during the operation.

Postoperative Care

After the surgery, please have a mode of transportation set up to get you home, whether that would be through transit, cab, or someone giving you a ride. You will not be able to drive for a couple of days while your eyes are healing.

Please wear the specialty sunglasses given to you after your procedure, and follow the eye drop regimen provided by your eye care professionals.

Your eye care team will book follow-up appointments with you to monitor the healing process, and will address any complications you may experience. Some of the most common side-effects of laser eye surgery include:

  • Redness and irritation
  • Dry eyes
  • Watery or teary eyes
  • Light sensitivity

Please let your eye care professional know if you experience any of these symptoms.
