Dry Eye: What Is It?

Dry eye is a general term to describe a variety of different eye conditions caused by tear production issues. 3 different layers make up the tear film, including mucin later, an aqueous layer, and a lipid layer that contains meibum.

When the ratios of these ingredients are off, it can cause:

  • Redness and irritation
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye fatigue
  • Overly watery or teary eyes
  • Stringy mucus developing
  • Problems wearing contact lenses
  • Light sensitivity

Dry Eye Treatments We Offer

ABMax is a small, handheld tool used to treat blepharitis (an eye disease that causes blockages in the oil glands on your eyelids). The device is a soft spinning brush used to clear away solidified oil blocking the oil glands, which allows your eyes to continue to produce the oil they need to create a healthy and robust tear film.

LipiFlow is a tool used by optometrists to help relieve symptoms of meibomian gland dysfunction, also known as MGD. By applying heat and gentle pressure to the eyelid, the device can melt the solidified lipids blocking the meibomian gland, allowing your eyes to resume lipid production.

Demodex is a species of mite so tiny that they can grow and multiply on hair follicles, including eyelashes. They are often found at the base of the follicles, feeding on dead skin cells and can cause redness, irritation, and burning.

Your optometrist can help by prescribing different ointments, medications, face washes, or eye drops to remove the mites.

Meibography is an imaging program used by optometrists to study your meibomian glands and diagnose symptoms of MGD.
