Digital Eye Strain

Prolonged Digital Device Use can Affect Your Comfort & Wellbeing

Did you know that the average person spends up to 11 hours a day using digital devices? This might seem like a lot, but between working on computers, using our smartphones, watching television, and playing video games, that screen time can add up quickly.

However, prolonged use can cause a variety of eye problems, including dry eyes.

If you believe that too much digital device use is affecting your eyes, then it’s time to book an eye exam with us. We can help provide you with treatments and strategies that can help you keep your eyes happy and comfortable so you can get back to focusing on the task at hand without worrying about your eyes getting in the way.

How Does Prolonged Close Focus Affect Our Eyes?

There are a variety of ways for digital eye strain to cause issues for your eyes. Eye strain might seem minor at first, but focusing at a close distance for long periods can cause symptoms to worsen.

A lot of digital eye strain has to do with how bright the screens you’re looking at are compared to the ambient lighting. Working on screens with high brightness while in a dark room means your eyes need to work harder, causing strain.

Your eyes can feel strained if you are focusing too hard on a screen that is close to your face. When you focus, your eyes start to blink less, which reduces the quality of the tear film on your eye.

Symptoms of eye strain can include:

  • Headaches
  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred or doubled vision
  • Irritation and redness

If you already have a vision error like myopia, presbyopia, or astigmatism, your symptoms could be exacerbated.

How Can My Optometrist Help?

The best way to approach digital eye strain, or any eye condition, is to begin by booking an appointment with your optometrist. Your optometrist can help you get to the root of the problem, and offer solutions to help manage or even eliminate digital eye strain.

For digital eye strain, your optometrist may recommend a variety of at-home treatments to help mitigate your symptoms. Some of these options could include:

  • Office ergonomics. Posture and positioning can have a significant effect on the comfort of your vision. By setting your computer up at an arm’s length and tilting it back, you can reduce the impact your computer screen can have on your vision. You should also make sure that your screen brightness is set to an appropriate level. Your screen should never be brighter than your ambient lighting.
  • The 20/20/20 rule. This is a common exercise recommended by optometrists to help patients remember to give their eyes a break. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at an object about 20 feet away. This can help rest your eyes so you can get back to the task at hand.
  • Eye drops. Your optometrist can help recommend the right type of eye drops that could help your digital eye strain. Some of them might need to be prescribed; others are available over-the-counter.
