Children’s Eye Exams

Set Your Child up for Success

Children aren’t born knowing how to use their vision to make sense of the world around them. When they are born, babies’ visual field is limited to between a few centimetres and a few feet, and slowly expands as they grow. Think of it like learning to walk and talk; the skill to see isn’t innate; it needs to be cultivated.

As a parent, you have a responsibility to make sure their eyes are developing naturally. Most small children may not be able to effectively communicate that something is wrong, or may not notice that their vision isn’t working as it should. To help safeguard your child’s vision and eye health, make sure they have their eyes examined regularly.

Book an appointment with us today and help ensure the health of your child’s eyes and set them up for visual excellence for the rest of their lives.

The Importance of Eye Exams for Your Child

Shortly after birth, your child has minimal control of their vision, often only seeing blurry images. Over the next couple of months, this skill develops more as they start to take in the world around them.

However, this skill doesn’t develop at the same rate for all children, and some may start to show signs of vision problems very early on. These problems can only be accurately diagnosed with a comprehensive eye exam, which is why the Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children undergo their first eye exam between the ages of 6 and 9 months old.

It is around this age when symptoms of myopia, amblyopia, or strabismus typically begin to develop.

Your child’s second eye exam should be booked for between the ages of 2 and 5 years old. At this age, your child is beginning to rely on their vision for things like navigating the world around them, playing, and problem-solving. Once your child starts pre-school, they should have their eyes examined annually.

Early diagnosis plays a vital role in managing visual issues your child may develop. Invest in your child’s development and their future. Book their eye exam today!

How to Spot Potential
Vision Problems in
Your Child

Young children aren’t always able to tell us when something is wrong with their vision. That’s why parents and other caregivers need to keep an eye out for signs of trouble. Your child may have a vision problem if they:

  • Complain of frequent headaches
  • Are having problems reading, such as trouble remembering their place or mixing up words
  • Are tilting their heads while they are reading, writing, or watching television
  • Are constantly rubbing or covering their eyes

What Should Your Child Expect From an Eye Exam

Our children’s eye exams operate very much like the eye exams we perform for our adult and senior patients. Your child’s eye exam will start with a conversation with you about your child’s health and family history. Make sure you bring up any questions or concerns you may have about your child’s vision so that their optometrist can tailor their eye exam if necessary.

From here, your optometrist will check your child’s eyes to determine their visual strength, acuity, alignment, and coordination. Your child’s optometrist will also look for signs of eye disease or other issues. While the risk of developing an eye disease is relatively low when your child is young, it can still occur, so it is best to remain vigilant.

After all the tests, your optometrist will update your child’s prescription (if necessary) and prescribe any medications your child requires. If your child requires new glasses or contact lenses, one of our opticians will work with you to find a solution that suits your child’s needs. They will also show you and your child how to care for your child’s contacts or glasses.
